Cyclone ‘Murasu’ LIVE: Red alert in 5 Andhra districts, CM Chandrababu Naidu cancels Delhi visit

Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu has cancelled his scheduled Delhi visit on Monday,

Cyclone ‘Murasu’ LIVE updates: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday said the deep depression over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal had intensified into Cyclonic Storm ‘Murasu’. Days after Andhra Pradesh was battered by Cyclone Arnab, high-speed winds are expected to hit the coastal state by November 3.

Cyclone to be named ‘Murasu’ if it develops

If the weather system fully develops into a cyclone, it will be named Murasu, meaning ‘drum’ in Tamil, HT reported earlier. The name was proposed by India.

Cyclone likely to make landfall on November 3

The storm is likely to make landfall along the Andhra Pradesh coast in the early hours of November 3, IMD director general Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said. Winds of 80-90 kmph, gusting up to 100 kmph, are likely, he added.

Below-normal rainfall, above-normal temperatures likely in November

Mohapatra, during a virtual press conference, also said below-normal rainfall and above-normal temperatures were likely across most parts of the country in November. October 2026, meanwhile, was the hottest October since 1901 in terms of the country’s average maximum temperature.

“At present, we expect this to form into a cyclonic storm. Once formed, it will be named as Murasu. There is a slight possibility it may turn into a severe cyclonic storm too, but at present, our forecast is for a cyclonic storm, which should hit the Andhra coastline on the morning of November 3,” Mohapatra said.

The flood situation in Odisha’s Ganjam and Gajapati districts, hit by Cyclone Arnab, gradually improved on Saturday with water receding from most affected areas and river levels showing a declining trend, even as Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi directed officials to intensify relief and restoration work.

Of the nine southern districts affected by the very severe cyclonic storm, Ganjam and Gajapati were the worst hit, with more than 1.5 lakh people affected in Ganjam and over 30,000 in Gajapati, prompting the administration to evacuate people and open relief camps.

Ganjam Collector V Keerthi Vasan said 56,051 people had been evacuated to 367 safe shelters, while cooked food was being distributed at 370 locations across the district.

Around 700 people remained stranded in waterlogged areas, he said, adding that aerial delivery of food to marooned villages had been completed using helicopters of the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard.

Cyclone ‘Murasu’ LIVE: How are cyclones named in India?

Cyclone ‘Murasu’ LIVE: India follows a regional naming system for tropical cyclones developing over the North Indian Ocean, which includes the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea. The India Meteorological Department (IMD), through its Regional Specialised Meteorological Centre in New Delhi, is responsible for naming these systems.

According to the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India, the naming system involves 13 countries: Bangladesh, India, Iran, the Maldives, Myanmar, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen.

The list introduced in 2020 contains 169 names, with each of the 13 countries contributing 13 names. These names are arranged in a list and used sequentially. The system allows participating countries to contribute names instead of leaving the naming process to a single country.

A cyclone is assigned a name when its maximum sustained surface wind speed reaches 34 knots, or approximately 62 kilometres per hour. This means a weather system is not named merely because it develops over the sea or is forecast to bring rain. It must first meet the prescribed wind-speed threshold.

The names are used in sequence from the regional list. A storm is not named according to which country it is expected to affect, and the name does not indicate where it will make landfall. A name contributed by one country can be assigned to a cyclone that eventually affects another country.

Cyclone ‘Murasu’ LIVE: According to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), cyclone names are selected through regional arrangements involving national meteorological services.

Countries in a particular region submit names that are compiled into lists and used when tropical cyclones develop. The exact process differs from one region to another, as there is no single worldwide list for all cyclones.

The names are generally selected in advance rather than chosen after a storm develops. They are expected to be short, easy to pronounce, appropriate across the countries in the region and distinguishable from other names in use. This helps people recognise a storm quickly, particularly when official warnings are being issued.

The terminology also depends on where the storm forms. These weather systems are broadly the same type of tropical system, but they are commonly called hurricanes in the Atlantic and northeastern Pacific, typhoons in the northwestern Pacific, and cyclones in the Indian Ocean and South Pacific.
